The first Harvard Milk Days was held in 1942 with 3,000 people in attendance to honor the local dairy industry during war time; a simple but sincere tribute to the dairy farmer who formed the backbone of the community.

Harmilda, the milk cow, became a permanent fixture at the festival in 1966 when Robert Jones of Jones Packing traded some meat for the life size fiberglass Holstein.
