Four Seasons, Perpetual Fun
Once a world-famous health resort and center for scientific research, today Saranac Lake is a popular heritage tourism destination. You can enjoy an array of fascinating historical sites, museums, tours, and special events. Stay at the carefully restored Hotel Saranac, a unique 1920s hotel in the heart of downtown Saranac Lake.
Today, spring wildflowers and putting the canoe in the lake for the first time. Summer splashing at the beach and sunny hikes. Fall foliage road trips and apple cider. Skiing through winter and celebrating Winter Carnival. Every season in Saranac Lake is distinctive, offering activities, events, and even special dining that is unique to that time of year.
Whether looking for that bucket list snowmobile safari, an ice fishing outing, a place to camp with the kids, or a fall foliage getaway just for two, visitors will find seasonal beauty and adventure here in the Saranac Lake region. The Adirondacks are, frankly, the most wonderful place in the world for a walk or a hike. From a stroll through fragrant woods on level ground to breathtakingly steep ascents of big mountains, it is just minutes from downtown Saranac Lake.
The Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Centermfeatures beautiful trails ranging from one to nine miles in length through a variety of habitats. Some of the trails are wheelchair accessible, so everyone can enjoy the woods. For an outstanding spot to take in the views of the McKenzie Mountain Wilderness Area, drive north on Route 86. Past the junction with Route 186, watch for a pull-off at the top of the hill on the right. From this gorgeous vantage point, visitors have an unobstructed view of nearly 40,000 acres of wilderness, much of it covered in bright, changing leaves.
Enjoy history with a self-guided tour of the village's unique "cure cottage" architecture, or join a walking tour that includes a stop in the Saranac Laboratory Museum. Owned and operated by Historic Saranac Lake, the Saranac Laboratory Museum highlights Saranac Lake's unique history as a tuberculosis treatment destination. The Museum features exhibits on local history, science, and patient care, as well as rotating special exhibits on local history topics.
