Florida Caverns State Park is the only Florida state park to offer cave tours to the public. Tours last about 45 minutes and visitors should prepare for a moderate workout. Those unable to access the tour will find an audiovisual program, touring the cave and other natural areas of the park, available in the visitor center.
The natural world around Marianna, Florida, did not fare well following Hurricane Michael in October 2018. Michael made landfall over the top of Marianna as a Category 5 hurricane. Hundreds of square acres of forests and vegetation were leveled in the 12 hours it took for Michael to pass through and it took some residents days to clear enough downed trees to just get out their driveways. The Marianna Chamber of Commerce estimates it will take years, if not decades, to restore the natural terrain, but again, progress is being made.
The Florida Caverns State Park reopened for limited services on July 1, 2019 offering cave tours, a visitor center, a few trails, and water activities, including the Chipola River Paddling Trail. Those wishing to explore the caves will need a flashlight, though, as the cave’s lighting system was wiped out in the storm. Tours are going “old school” as they did for decades before the lighting system was installed. The artifact museum and virtual cave tour theater are also open, but with 90% of the park trees destroyed and destruction to most of the campground, camping is still a while off.
Campground amenities include Concessions, Dump Station, Elec. 30 Amp, Elec. 50 Amp, Grills, Grills, Picnic Area, Picnic Area, Playground, Playground, Showers, and Water Hookup. Activities include bicycling, birding, canoeing, equestrian riding, and hiking.
There's an entrance fee that varies with the number of occupants in your vehicle. The fee for one was just $4. The cavern tour is an additional fee per person. For a single adult, the fee is $10 plus tax.
