Wells State Park

Wells State Park

Wells State Park was established in 1968. It is a 1,400-acre public recreation area located off Route 49 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The woodlands are made up of an oak-hickory forest and northern hardwood forest types with groves of eastern white pine. The terrain is rugged with ledges interspersed between wetlands.

A hike up the Carpenter Rocks offers a fantastic view of the park. A notable trail leads to the cliffs of Carpenter Rocks, named after John Carpenter, who built and operated a sawmill nearby. Scenic views include the eastern section of Walker Pond and the surrounding wooded valley.

Walker Pond's 104 acres provide opportunities for boating and fishing. The fish population is made up of largemouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, white perch, bluegill, pumpkin-seed, brown bullhead, white suckers, golden and bridled shiners.

Nature Programs run from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Additional park activities include mountain biking, hunting, biking, canoeing and kayaking, cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and boating (both motorized and non-motorized)

Bring your tent, trailer, or R.V. to any of the 60 sites located near Walker Pond. You must reserve a campsite between Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend. There are 55 Tent/RV Sites and four yurts. Amenities include two Comfort Stations with access to showers that are free of charge for campers staying in the park. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and grill (including yurts). Firewood is available for $5 per bundle. Outside wood is not permitted.

Campers can reserve a site any time between one day and 4 months before the arrival date. There is a two-day minimum stay at most campsites with a total stay of not more than 14 days at each campground between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In addition to the four accessible yurts in the upper campground, two campsites in the lower campground are also accessible.
