Ohio Caverns

Ohio Caverns is often recognized as “America’s most colorful caverns.” Ohio Caverns is a show cave located near Troy in the town of West Liberty. A popular tourist destination and member of the National Caving Association, it is the largest of all the cave systems in Ohio and contains many crystal formations, with over 2 miles of surveyed passageways ranging in depth from 30 feet to 103 feet.

The Ohio Caverns team goes to great lengths to protect the delicate cavern environment, so future generations can view the cavern as it was first observed in 1897. The cavern system was originally an aquifer, holding an underground river of melted glacier water. This river eventually receded to lower levels of the ground and is now unseen. Approximately 90% of its stalactite and stalagmite formations are still active.

Tours take guests through two different parts of the cavern. The Historic Tour begins at the site of discovery and includes the area that was originally explored from 1897 to 1925. The Natural Wonder Tour takes guests on a one-mile walk through parts discovered after 1925. It includes the largest stalactite in Ohio, The Crystal King, along with many other marvelous formations and colors.

A 35-acre well maintained park is located directly above the caverns and contains a playground, picnic shelters, other picnic areas, EV charging stations, and newly-renovated restrooms. A large rock and gift shop is located within the Visitor’s Center building containing many unique souvenirs, along with rocks and fossils.
