North Country Trail: Sheyenne National Grassland West Trailhead

Sheyenne National Grassland is located in southeastern North Dakota, comprising 70,180 acres of public land amid 64,769 acres of privately owned land. It is characterized by sandy soils, originally deposited as the delta of an ancient river as it emptied into glacial Lake Agassiz. Since that time, wind and rain have shaped the topography into a unique landscape ranging from flat deltaic plains to choppy sand dunes.

These sections of the North Country Trail meander through the Sheyenne Valley across rolling hills, forest, prairie, and through Valley City. Amenities along the Trail include backcountry campsites, campgrounds, public recreation areas, tourist information sites, and supply stores. The Trail also crosses a number of natural, historic, and cultural attractions. Certified segments include the Sheyenne State Forest, Fort Ransom State Park, Kathryn to Clausen Springs Recreation Area, Valley City, and Lake Ashtabula.

Access to the trail is about 13 miles east of Lisbon. Take ND-27 East to 141st Street and turn right. Follow 141st Street for about three miles and the trailhead is on the left. The NCT heads through a swing gate heading northeast before swinging to the southeast and passing over a long puncheon through a wet area. After crossing through a fence, the NCT turns north, passes by a stock water tank, and then crosses another fence before crossing a two-track road.

North of the road crossing, the NCT crosses through another couple of fences heading northeast toward a large grove of trees. The trees include a mix of planted Ponderosa Pines and deciduous trees. Past the trees, it crosses through two more gates to the northeast before turning north and passing a livestock corral area and a stock watering tank. It swings to the northwest through a large wetland. The NCT then heads east-southeast through a landscape of prairie-covered sand dunes and wetlands before turning north, crossing a puncheon, and then reaching the swing gate at Hwy 27.
