Arcadia is one of the most diverse cities in Southern California, and its restaurants reflect that. Whether one is hungry for some world-famous dumplings at Din Tai Fung or thirsty for some unique craft beers at Matt Denny’s, Arcadia has something for everyone.

In 1771, the site that became the city was part of the Spanish Mission San Gabriel Arcángel lands. After exchanging hands many times, 8,000 acres were purchased by Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin in 1903 and he founded the city of Arcadia. He was its first mayor, and the direction the city took in its early development was under his watchful eye and approval. His vision for the city included building the famous Santa Anita Racetrack. It was his daughter Anita who built the 50-room mansion on her part of Rancho Santa Anita. The Gilb Museum offers a display featuring Ms. Baldwin.

Arcadia was known for being “wide open,” with entertainment available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its reputation was one of lawlessness and political turmoil. But the city’s second decade was one of change, both in reputation and real estate development. Large land holdings were subdivided and on the smaller lots, poultry raising became the largest business. Many large poultry ranches supplied eggs and meat to the Los Angeles markets. City streets were graded and paved, street lights were erected and the sleepy city took on the look of an urban community. Parts of Arcadia are considered some of the richest real estate in Southern California.

There is never a shortage of things to do in Arcadia. From world-famous Santa Anita Park to the sprawling nature area that is the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden, there is a great variety when it comes to events, activities, entertainment, and shopping. Visitors will find friendly and comfortable lodging in all price ranges in Arcadia. After a day at the races, nothing beats a plunge in the pool or a nap on crisp cool sheets.
