Adventure is calling in Crescent City, the Gateway to Redwood National and State Parks, and the tallest trees in the world. The Sequoia Semperviren (Coastal Redwood) once covered most of the land of North America but is now only found in a narrow area along the northern California coast. Here, these trees grow over 350 feet tall, towering over the landscape of thousands of acres of the old-growth forest barely explored by humans.

Crescent City, located in Del Norte County, is home to so much more. Visitors can take in the staggering beauty of these ancient trees and then find tons of activities and attractions to enjoy in the area. Stroll down a serene St. George Beach. Standup paddleboard in the crystal waters at South Beach. Go beachcombing on Enderts Beach. During low tide, it’s one of the best areas to view tidepools. Hike among giants in deep green forests.

Just north of Crescent City is a rugged playground that offers recreation for any adventurer. Nature lovers will be drawn to Tolowa Dunes State Park as wildlife flock to this area. It won’t be hard to spot deer, migrating ducks, hawks, eagles, osprey, or even the Peregrine falcon. For a truly majestic experience, take a horseback ride through wooded meadows to spot a herd of Roosevelt Elk. Discover the pristine Smith River, a Wild and Scenic River that draws photographers, fishermen, and kayakers to its crystal clear emerald waters every season of the year in search of record-setting salmon and steelhead, or Class 3 and 4 rapids.

And at the end of the day, visitors can join locals for the catch of the day and a craft brew while watching an awe-inspiring sunset over the Pacific Ocean. There is something for everyone to savor in and around Crescent City.

Fun Facts

Part of the town of Crescent City was destroyed and lives were lost when a tsunami rolled into the town following the Alaska Earthquake in 1964.
