The modern municipality was founded in 1853 by Irish immigrant George Bennett, who named the town after his birthplace of Bandon, Ireland, and introduced gorse plants to the local landscape—a decision that inadvertently contributed to a catastrophic forest fire in 1936 that nearly destroyed the town.
